Not every lawn project starts according to plan.
Recently, we received a call from an Oak Grove homeowner who found themselves with a property ready for seed, but the contractor they originally hired to complete the work had stopped responding and never returned to finish the project.
To make matters worse, a major storm was approaching and with exposed soil, a prepared seedbed and heavy rain on the way, the homeowner knew they needed to act fast before erosion, washouts and additional costs became a reality (and a mud pit).
Hydroseeding Against The Weather
When we arrived the site was already prepped for grass seed, but with the skies darkening – time was running out.
Large downpours of rain can be devastating for newly prepared soil. Without proper protection, valuable topsoil can be washed away, seed can be displaced and low spots can form throughout the property. After evaluating the site, we developed a custom plan to ensure the lawn had the best possible chance of success, despite the incoming weather.
Choosing The Right Hydroseeding Materials For The Job
With the rain on its way, we choose to use a thick wood fiber mulch mixture combined with plenty of tackifier. This tackifier acts as a binding agent within the hydroseeding slurry, allowing the mulch and seed to stay firmly in place during rain storms. As the storm was rapidly approaching, we knew that creating a strong protective blanket across the soil was critical!
Our Hydroseeding Goal Was Simple
- Protect the prepared soil
- Minimize erosion or washout risk
- Keep the seed in place, even with the downpour
- Give the homeowner’s lawn the best opportunity to grow successfully

A Job Completed In The Knick of Time
When you are racing the weather, timing matters. As we wrapped up the final sections of lawn, rain had begun to fall.
Within minutes, the storm intensified bringing a steady downpour across the property – and our newly laid hydroseed slurry.
Thankfully, our thick wood fiber mulch and tackifier slurry preformed exactly as intended. Rather than washing away, the mulch layer stayed firmly in place and protected the seedbed underneath.
How Did A Hydroseeded Lawn Standup To The Rain?
In the weeks that followed, the lawn established itself beautifully. The homeowner was relieved to see such strong and healthy growth, with minimal disruption from the storm. What could have been a frustrating and expensive setback for the Oak Grove homeowner became a successful lawn install!

Most importantly, the Minnesota homeowner was happy with the final result and thankful to have found a hydroseeding contractor willing to step in when they needed it the most.
