Enjoy a lush, healthy lawn with professional hydroseeding from American Hydroseeding. We provide fast, cost-effective lawn seeding for new construction homes, residential properties, acreage lots, commercial sites and erosion control projects across Minnesota and Western Wisconsin.
Hydroseeding is a lawn installation method that applies a carefully blended mixture of grass seed, mulch, fertilizer, tackifier and water directly onto prepared soil. This slurry helps retain moisture, improves seed-to-soil contact and encourages faster, more even germination than traditional seeding.
Who Does Hydroseeding Benefit?
Homeowners
Hydroseeding is a smart option for homeowners starting a new lawn, repairing bare areas, improving patchy grass or wanting a more durable option for a lush lawn. It provides even coverage, strong germination and a cost-effective way to establish a healthy lawn.
Whether new construction or renovated properties, they all often need a fast, efficient way to establish grass after final grading. Hydroseeding works well for newly built homes, developments, and finished lots by creating consistent coverage across large areas.
Hydroseeding is ideal for large residential lots, acreage properties, commercial sites, and open land where traditional seeding can be slow and sod can become costly. It offers efficient coverage for larger spaces while supporting long-term lawn establishment.
We’ve developed a meticulously crafted, comprehensive six-step process that acts as your personal roadmap, guiding you steadily towards your fitness goals.
01.
Evaluation
We begin with a comprehensive understanding of your property’s history, goals and your lifestyle. We evaluate your property’s soil condition, grading and drainage to determine the best approach for a healthy, long-lasting lawn.
02.
Site Preparation
In our assessments, we prioritize perfecting your lawn through our intensive preparation techniques to ensure safe, effective hydroseeding. Through clearing debris, removing rocks, identify risks and grading the soil we create a smooth, even surface for optimal seed contact.
03.
Soil Conditioning
This step improves your soil’s ability to support growth by adjusting nutrients and structure. We may add topsoil, compost, soil amendments or adjust the seed mix needed to enhance fertility, drainage and seed-to-soil contact.
04.
Custom Seed Blend Selection
We partner with a local seed producer to select a grass seed mix specifically suited for Minnesota and Wisconsin climates, factoring in sun exposure, soil type and how the lawn will be used by you and your family.
05.
Hydroseed Application
A specialized slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer and bonding agents is evenly sprayed across your property, ensuring full coverage and ideal growing conditions.
06.
After Care Guidance
The care your lawn receives after hydroseeding application is critical for the success of growth. We provide clear watering and maintenance instructions, as well as are available 24/7 to answer any questions you might have to help your new lawn establish quickly and grow thick, healthy and resilient.

“We hired American Hydroseed to hydroseed our front yard. The team was very responsive via text to all of our questions, was able to get the exact seed we wanted, and was prompt and on time for the day of seeding. Common Hydroseeding Questions
How Much Does Hydroseeding Cost?
Hydroseeding typically costs approximately $0.20 per square foot, but can vary depending on seed selection, soil condition and site preparation required.
How Often Should Hydroseed Be Watered?
Hydroseeding needs to maintain moisture to be successful. A few dry patches do not mean you need to immediately turn sprinklers on. However, if the entire hydroseed layer dries out for several hours between watering cycles, germination can slow significantly.
When Should I Fertilize After Hydroseeding?
The first fertilizer application should typically be made 3 to 4 weeks after application. Follow-up applications are usually recommended every 3 to 4 weeks during early establishment.
Is Hydroseeding Better Than Seeding?
Hydroseeding offers full-uniform coverage, faster germination and is perfect for erosion control for larger areas, new construction sites and acreage properties. While seeding is usually cheaper and great for DIY projects, it does take longer to germinate and comes in patchy.
When Is The Best Time To Hydroseed?
Spring and fall are usually ideal to hydroseed your property. However, hydroseeding can also be successful during summer with proper watering and aftercare.
How Long Does Hydroseeding Take To Grow?
Most lawns begin to germinate within 7-14 days depending on weather, watering and soil conditions. Make sure to follow our after care guide to ensure optimal growth.
What Does Hydroseed Look Like?
Hydroseed appears as a green, papery-like substance on your lawn. However, as it dries it can change color and is a good indicator to water your hydroseed.
How Long After Hydroseeding Can I Walk On It?
Technically, you can walk on your hydroseeding right away. Just ensure that you do not drag your feet, hoses, object or anything that would disturb the seed.
Is It Normal To See Weeds After Hydroseeding?
Yes, it’s normal to see weeds after hydroseeding. Early weeds are common and often disappear with regular mowing and healthy turf growth. Broadleaf herbicide can usually be applied after 6 to 8 weeks if needed.
When Can I Mow After Hydroseeding?
You can mow after hydroseeding, once the grass is tall enough that the mower is actually cutting material. However don’t set your mower deck any lower than 3” and don’t bag your clippings. Mulching them actually returns nutrients to your hydroseed, as long as there aren’t noticeable piles of clippings laying around.
